Denso announced on January 31, 2011 that it has developed the world's lightest weight
Automotive Starter motor weighing only 1.9kg, and has been adopted by the new MRWagon launched by Suzuki in January.
The
Starter Motor pushes out the pinion and the engine gear meshing transmission power when the engine starts. Denso has been focusing on the miniaturization of the rotary pinion motor. The focus of this year was on improving the mechanism for pushing the pinion.
The mechanism for pushing the pinion consists of a pinion meshed with the ring gear, an overrunning clutch that prevents the pinion from being rotated by the engine, a solenoid mechanism located beside the starter motor, and a lever mounted on the solenoid mechanism that pushes out the pinion by a lever mechanism. Originally, because the pinion gear and the overrunning clutch were pushed together by the control rod in this configuration, the output power of the solenoid coil was required to be large, and the mechanical strength of the control rod was also high.
The new starter motor separates the originally integrated pinion gear from the clutch, and has developed a "pinion gear shifting structure" that moves only the pinion gear in the axial direction. Only the pinion is moved so that the weight of the moving part is reduced by about 70%. In this way, the output power of the solenoid coil is reduced, and the total weight is reduced by about 40% in combination with other weight reduction effects.
The 1.9kg starter motor is used in small cars and can support petrol cars from the mini-vehicle level to the 1.2L class. In addition, although the weight reduction effect is about 30% lower, it can support 1.2-2.5L class vehicles and the 2.1kg starter motor has also been developed. In the future, not only in Japan, but also in China, Thailand, Brazil, India and other places, the goal is to reach an annual output of 5 million units.
